Baby Boomers Retire | No Way
58Boomers Retire -- Not Yet
Baby Boomer Generation
Over the past 4 weeks there have been several news releases about a survey couducted by researchers at the Kauffman Foundation:
On June 22, 2009 Paul Braind of the Baby Boomer Examiner (www.examiner.com) cited really what amounts to a news breaking story about a study conducted by the Kauffman Foundation. In the United States today the "...highest rated entrepreneurial activity belongs to the Baby Boomer go-getters." In fact "... that the largest population group is also the most entrepreneurial bodes well for the US Economic future", according to Robert E. Litan, VP of Research and Policy at the Kauffman Foundation.
Other key findings from the this study include:
- "Long term employment has dropped significantly for people ages 35 to 64 over the past 50 years.
- Longer life expectancies and greater health point to an increased number of new start-up firms.
- Many barriers to starting a new business have disappeared since the first internet recession era."
On July 27 the Tampa Bay Business Journal http://tampabay.bizjournals.com/tampabay/stories/2009/06/29/story3.html reported that "Aging baby boomers aren’t headed out to pasture. They’re starting businesses." And according to Ewing Marion - the Kauffman Foundation study that predicts the United States may be “on the cusp of an entrepreneurship boom.”
On July 1 2009 author Emily Brandon reporting in the US News and World Report (http://www.usnews.com/blogs/planning-to-retire/2009/07/01/baby-boomer-businesses-are-booming.html) stated that the "Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 have had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those age 20 to 34 in every year between 1996 and 2007, according to a recent study by the Kauffman Foundation."
On July 2, 2009 the Wichita Business Journal commenting on the Kauffman Foundations study reported the following: "The very idea of ‘too-big-to-fail’ institutions has been permanently damaged,” according to study author Stangler who writes. “Recent economic trends – away from lifetime jobs and toward more new companies – will thus gain even greater cultural traction. New and stronger regulations aiming to prevent the rise of such giant organizations also may help create a more market-oriented society.”
New Entreprenuers
Dane Stangler, a senior analyst at the Kauffman Foundation and author of the study, says baby boomer entrepreneurship is likely to continue throughout the current recession, both out of necessity after a layoff and because some baby boomers have always wanted to work for themselves.
What is interesting is the national recognition that the Kauffman Study has generated. Baby Boomers are still impacting our county and its cultural. And this time it is very, very positive. We need their earning power to remain intact.
A commenter from the Emiliy Brandon article says it all:
To be Boomerous is to stay engaged and be a powerful force in life
Acknowledging the economy has certainly taken its toll on us all, I am one who is truly not surprised by booming boomer businesses.
We are wiser, more insightful, adventurous, and have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience over the past several decades. Given the fact we boomers like as much control over our circumstances as possible - coupled with our drive and strong work ethic, entrepreneurial success is inevitable.
Not only are we [the baby boomer community] a powerful influence, with 20 to 30 years of good health ahead, we will continue creating, working, living, traveling, buying, and causing our lives for years to come. Reaching or passing mid-life does not have to mean we should slow down and coast out the remainder of our lives. We are simply not ready to pass the baton!
In fewer terms, we have a lot of life yet to live - we are Boomerous!
